No, I’m not talking about The Good Book; The Bi-ble is an anthology of personal narratives and essays about bisexuality compiled by the duo at Monstrous Regiment, a new indie publisher of feminist, bold, intersectional, unapologetic and diverse work.
After seeing my work on the Hings cover, the MR ladies asked me to design something that expressed the essence of bisexuality. They had me at the pun-tastic title!
The idea of using religious imagery to play off the title was discounted early on as the title was so strong it just didn’t need reinforcing.
Duality was also a theme in the initial sketches, but the holistic nature of sexuality was at odds with the concept, so it was disregarded too.
The MR duo gave me some brilliant words like ‘openness’, ‘vulnerability’, ‘complexity’ and ‘personal’ to describe the essays in the book, and that fired off a whole new set of ideas.
Concepts and Development
Concept 1 was a pretty neat idea; a fingerprint from each contributor would decorate the background to illustrate the diverse and individual nature of sexuality.
The bright colours were a bit too frivolous, so they evolved into darker jewel tones.
Concept 2 explored the idea of connection and partnership.
Concept 3 was a bit off-the-wall, in response to a phrase the MR ladies mentioned in an email, ‘something opening outward, something narrow and simple flowing into something complex and beautiful.’
Working toward a final cover
Concept 4 felt right for the book, so it was developed to create a more minimal and iconic design.
To create a more natural, human feel, the title typography and illustration were hand-drawn and subtle textures were added.
Above are some variations on the final cover.
This one was crowned the best and final cover – what do you think?
It had a fabulous debut on the Kickstarter where it was fully funded within 30 days! I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy soon!
